About Highlands/Sloan's Lake
Highlands
The West Highland neighborhood includes the northwestern part of what was the incorporated Town of Highlands. From its beginning as an elite suburb of the "unsavory" city of Denver in 1875, the town expanded until its boundaries stretched north from Colfax Avenue to 38th Avenue and west from Zuni Street to Sheridan Boulevard. By 1890, there were 35 subdivision developments in addition to the original Highland Park.
As the population of the town grew, it did not remain as exclusively wealthy as its original planners had intended. Many of the subdivisions allowed small homes to be built on 25-foot lots. However, the town did remain residential and the housing was primarily owner-occupied, with great pride shown by the owners.
In the 1890s, large numbers of Irish, German, and English immigrants came to the area. Later, many Italians arrived and formed a colony in the neighborhood. A large-scale influx of Chicanos began in the 1960s, but has been slowed recently by the influx of young Anglo couples and families.
Today, Highlands' residential district is beautiful and quaint. Its architecture has made it a sought-after destination for young families and LoDo business professionals. Building interiors are characterized by their exposed brick walls, winding staircases and other whimsical attributes of Victorian architecture. Highland is currently undergoing a housing revival with the construction of a number of new houses, condos and rentals in a variety of architectural styles.
The commercial district along 32nd and 29th Streets, is lined with trendy boutiques, martini bars, restaurants and salons. With its growing allure for residents and businesses, Highlands is bound to blossom even more in the coming years.

Sloan's Lake
Located next to Edgewater, Sloan's Lake is one of Denver's premier urban parks. It has beautiful views of the Denver skyline and the adjacent park is a wonderful place to walk, jog, bike or picnic. The path around the lake is nearly 3 miles long. Sloan's Lake is one of 3 lakes in Denver to boat on (aside from Smith Lake in Wash Park and Berkeley Lake).
It was created in 1861 by a farmer named Thomas Sloan, who started digging on his land. Apparently, he hit an underground aquifier because the next day there was a lake in that spot!
Sheridan Blvd., on the west side of Sloan's Lake, is the closest you'll feel to being on an ocean waterfront in Denver. Seagulls will pass overhead, you will smell the nearby water, and the little shops flanking the western bank will create the illusion of being in a place like Bar Harbor, except without the tourist traps.
Currently, the Sloan's Lake neighborhood is experiencing a renaissance with new homes, renovations and new shops springing up. It's located a few blocks west of the booming Highlands neighborhood, which experienced a similar renaissance in the past decade.

About Me
I spent some time living in the South as a boy. My parents considered the purchase of a mansion house along Bath House Row in Hot Springs Ark., when I was 12. I was enamoured with it, the whole idea of it, and was heartbroken when we didn't purchase it and moved into a new 70's ranch. It left a life-long impression on me.
I served in the U.S. Army for 7 years as a tank commander, and then a linguist, leaving after the end of Desert Storm at age of 24. I landed in San Francisco to pursue my lifelong dream of being a guitar maker, or Luthier, and playing music in a big metropolitan city. So, I grew my hair, dyed it black, and did just that.
San Francisco was something to behold. I was drawn to the incredible character of the city which permeated from it's rich Victorian architecture. I had the great fortune to live in Seattle Block, a fantastic 6 flat structure which sat next to the world famous Chateau Tivoli. They were both built by the same turn-of-the-century lumber baron.
At 28, a pivotal point in a young man's life, I opted to cut the hair, put away the guitar, and join a highly motivated sales organization known as Guitar Center. I opened the first store in Colorado as store manager at Ohio and Colorado Blvd here in Denver.
The similarities between San Francisco and Denver were very apparent, and I felt at home immediately. I began to spread roots, bought my first home, and settled in. My company, unfortunately, had other plans outside of Denver for me, and thus we parted ways.
Denver is truly one of the great U.S. cities. I felt that connecting others to it was my premier calling, and pursued a career in real estate. I had a great experience with Nostalgic Homes when purchasing an incredible Craftsman Bungalow before I was an agent. Nostalgic Homes specialization for me was a great fit, and I never thought to work anywhere else.
My fellow Realtor wife and partner in Nostalgic Homes, Jenny Apel, and I live and breathe this business and are keenly in tune with its urban markets. We have nearly two decades of combined experience in real estate. No one knows Denver homes and neighborhoods better than we do. Give me a call today!
